Boudoir Photography - the basics

A boudoir photography session is a great gift for your significant other or even yourself.
My clients find boudoir photography as a great excuse to be pampered, and often purchase new lingerie or show off that new hairstyle!
Boudoir sessions should be a lot of fun and can be for men, women or even couples.  Here are a few steps to have the best session ever

First - Create your own Pinterest board and start pinning your ideas, and feel free to share with Photography by Blake.  This is very helpful in capturing your vibe and insight into how you see feminitiy, beauty and innate sexiness.
As your collection of images grows, you will begin to see trends in styles, accessories and colors.  You might have several items available, so begin to visualize your clothing, heels, accessories and props to include during your session.  It's ok to thumb through your favorite fashion magazing to help find a style or color!
Before you run to Victoria Secrets and invest in your lingerie, check out your closet first and find those items which you feel  your very best.  Let your imagination roam, as you think about how it can be used in your session
My clients have often taken their bestie to go to a boutique and find ensenbles which flatters your figure AND make you feel comfortable.
When selecting lingerie, make sure it hightlights your curves and remember that a tight T-Shirt, soft sweater or even his button down shirt can be very sexy too!
I always suggest bringing something which is meaningful to your significant other, as it really helps to personalize your session.  It may be lingerie from that trip to France or that amazing bracelet you found on a trip to the Grand Canyon.

  • If you wax, do so a few days before your shoot to avoid any bumpiness or redness.
  • Make sure your eyebrows are nicely shaped and groomed.
  • If you’re planning to visit the salon for a haircut or color, then give yourself a few days to make sure you are happy with it.
  • Be sure to get a salon manicure and pedicure for a flawless finish.
  • Stay out of the sun – while a base tan will be nice in photos, red, blotchy skin will not.
  • Drink plenty of water for luminous skin.
  • Lower your salt intake and avoid alcohol if you’re worried about retaining water.
  • Try on your outfits and lingerie to make sure they fit properly; remove all tags and labels. Steam or iron your ensembles and hang them properly so they keep their shape as you travel to the studio.

  • Bathe, shave and moisturize.
  • Double-check everything is properly packed and ready for the shoot: heels, jewelry, accessories, props.
  • Allow yourself plenty of time to get to the studio without stressing. Check weather and traffic reports to ensure you have allotted enough time for unexpected delays.
  • Enjoy a relaxed, quiet evening.
  • Plan for a good night’s sleep – eight hours is ideal.

OK, I know you know what to do but just in case...

  • Use clear deodorant - If you need an explanation, please let me know :)
  • Always wear loose-fitting clothes to your session to avoid red marks on your skin.  This would include jeans, socks or even tight fitting unmentionables
  • Have a light meal before you leave home
  • Make sure you bring your final payment
  • Most importantly... Exhale... Inhale... Exhale... RELAX.  It is completely normal to be nervous before your boudoir session.  Remember, you are in good hands so please don't worry.  You will show how to pose and will work with you to get the perfect shot.
